Share of product carousel SERPs that also show AI Overview (last 30 days)

This chart shows the daily percentage of SERPs with at least one organic product carousel that also contain an AI Overview. Fluctuations reflect changes in query types and Google's algorithm decisions.

Data based on the last 30 days of data from Productrise.

Product carousels are already widespread on tracked queries

For most of the queries Productrise tracks, Google already shows at least one organic product carousel. Our separate analysis on how many SERPs contain organic product carousels puts that figure at roughly 87% on average over the last 30 days. Product visibility in Google Shopping is no longer a niche case: if you sell online, the carousel is usually part of the results page your customers see.

This page adds a second layer to that picture. On a meaningful share of those same SERPs, Google also places an AI Overview above the rest of the page. That combination is still the minority, but it matters because the overview is not just extra text. It is one of the main paths Google uses to move shoppers from a familiar SERP into AI Mode, where the product set can look very different from the carousel underneath.

Why this matters

When an AI Overview sits on top of a SERP that already shows product carousels, the shopper sees two competing product surfaces on one page: the organic carousel they already know, and an AI-generated answer that can recommend a much shorter list. Click through from the overview, or follow one of Google's AI Mode entry points, and the same query often carries straight over. From the shopper's point of view, nothing changed. From a seller's point of view, everything did.

Our July 2026 study on AI Mode versus standard search ran the same shopping queries on both surfaces on the same day. AI Mode returned roughly 95% fewer product listings overall, showed far fewer products even when it did surface shopping results, and only about 5% of products visible in standard search also appeared in AI Mode for the same query. Ranking well in the carousel is not the same as being recommended in the AI answer.

The follow-up matters just as much. In our study on pricing in AI Mode versus traditional search, matched products on the same query often showed different lead prices between the two surfaces, and AI Mode tended to surface higher prices in the listing shoppers see first. Most people do not click through to the knowledge panel to hunt for a cheaper seller. The price shown in the AI answer is the price most will act on.

That is why an AI Overview on a carousel SERP is more than a layout change. Google is siphoning more and more shopping journeys into AI Mode, often without a deliberate choice from the shopper. Brands need to know what Google recommends there, and at what price, not just what ranks in the familiar carousel.

Where shoppers enter AI Mode

In most cases the switch happens without any deliberate choice. The same query carries straight over, so from the shopper's point of view nothing appears to change. Here is where those entry points show up today.

Google now shows a prominent AI Mode option directly on the standard search box, which leads to AI Mode while keeping the same query in place.

How we calculate this data

For each day, we count the total number of unique SERPs tracked and identify those that contain at least one organic product listing and an AI Overview element (element_type = 'ai_overview' in our SERP elements data). The chart shows the percentage of carousel SERPs that also contain an AI Overview. The intro also reports the share of all tracked SERPs where both features appear together.
