Depth distribution: single seller vs multiple sellers

Last 30 days. Left = products with a single seller. Right = products Google signalled as having multiple sellers. Each bar shows that group's share at a 1% depth bin. Dashed line = average depth per group.

Data based on the last 30 days of data from Productrise.

Why seller count could affect ranking

When several stores sell the same item, Google's Shopping Graph collects data from all of them. More sources usually means Google understands the product better (its attributes, its typical price, and how shoppers respond to it) which can translate into more confident placement.

More sellers, more competitive pricing

Multiple sellers also compete on price. That competition tends to surface a better deal for the shopper, and better-value listings attract more clicks. Since price shapes click behavior, see our analysis on whether cheaper products rank higher.

The connection to click-through rate

For shared products, CTR signals from every seller feeding the same item contribute to how Google evaluates that listing. A richer pool of engagement data can help Google rank the product with more confidence than an item it has only seen from one source.

What this means for your feed

Seller overlap is common. See how many products are sold by multiple sellers in Google Shopping. Where you share a product with others, your best levers are the signals rivals neglect: high-resolution images, complete structured data, and rich product attributes.

How we calculate this data

For each tracked listing we record a has_multiple_sellers flag indicating whether Google signalled additional sellers alongside the primary one. We split products into two groups: single seller vs multiple sellers.

SERPs have different heights, so we normalize depth per SERP: Relative Depth = (1 − position_weight) × 100, where position_weight is 1 at the top of the SERP and 0 at the bottom. Lower depth means closer to the top of the page. Because the same product can appear on multiple days and the lead seller can change, counts reflect appearances rather than unique products.
